Program Agenda:
1. Guest Lecturer Janna Segal, Assistant Professor of Theatre Arts at the University of Louisville, will provide a framework lecture. (approximately 20-minutes in length. The framing lecture will offer "the historical and theoretical context for inclusive casting in general, and in Romeo and Juliet in particular, and for what we are doing with Romeo and Juliet in this year's McElroy Celebration.)
2. Production of a Brief Scene from William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet in three ways
------ One version will consist of the version of the scenes from the production of Romeo and Juliet by Ann Shanahan, Associate Professor of Theatre, Loyola University Chicago
------- CAMERON KNIGHT, FROM DePaul, will bring student-actors from his recent production of R&J at DePaul for the other versions
------- BUT the students may not be available --> won't know until closer to the date of the program
think of alternate ways in which to present/cast the scenes
------- Some combination of Ann, Cameron, and Janna will briefly introduce/comment on the scenes
---------------------- this part of the program should take 30-40 minutes
-------- The program's inclusiveness at the moment has more to do with gender than with ethnicity because of the available student actors
-------
A scene between Romeo and Juliet will be staged -- first with a man and woman, then with two women, and then with two men. (With the hopes that the scenes will lead to a fruitful discussion of how an actor's gender informs meaning)
---------
3. Panel Discussion and taking questions and comments from the audience
(about 30 minutes)
The panel discussion will consist of Janna, Ann, Cameron, and 2-3 other local theatre people
4. Small Reception to follow
Program Run time: 90 minutes (followed by the reception)
Program Lecturer/Dramaturg: Janna Segal, University of Louisville and Comparative Drama Conference ----------
