(Speaker) is Professor of English at St. John's University in New York City. Dr. Mentz completed his Ph.D. at Yale University in 2000. Dr. Mentz is the author of At the Bottom of Shakespeare’s Ocean (2009), Romance for Sale in Early Modern England (2006), and co-editor of Rogues and Early Modern English Culture (2004) and The Age of Thomas Nashe (2013). He has written articles and chapters on ecological criticism, Shakespeare, maritime literature, and the early modern book trade. In 2010 he curated a public gallery exhibition at the Folger Shakespeare Library, “Lost at Sea: The Ocean in the English Imagination, 1550 – 1750." His book Shipwreck Modernity: Ecologies of Globalization, 1550-1719, is forthcoming in 2015 from the University of Minnesota Press. LEONTES/SHEPHERD: Patrick Clear is a veteran stage actor who has appeared on Broadway, Off-Off-Broadway, at regional theatres around the country, on film & TV, and in more than sixty productions here in Chicago. Locally he has appeared at the Goodman, Chicago Shakespeare (formerly Shakespeare Rep), Steppenwolf, Northlight, First Folio, and Remy Bumppo. Over the course of his long and varied career he has appeared in some twenty-five Shakespearean productions at such theatres as Chicago Shakespeare, The Goodman, First Folio, Folger Shakespeare, The Goodman, First Folio, Folger Shakespeare, the Guthrie Theatre, and the American Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford, CT. His favorite Shakespearean roles include Gloucester in King Lear, Leonato in Much Ado About Nothing, and the King of France in All’s Well that Ends Well.
ANTIGONES/POLIXENES: Gary Alexander is thrilled to be a part of this year’s McElroy Celebration. Later this month, he will open in Major Barbara at ShawChicago. Other credits include: 12 shows for ShawChicago (most recently, The Importance of Being Earnest, Man and Superman, Saint Joan, and Mrs. Warren’s Profession); Merchant of Venice, King Lear, and Heywood’s Fair Maid of the West for The Shakespeare Project of Chicago; Drury Lane’s A Christmas Carol, the Goodman Theatre’s Binky Rudic; the Ravinia Festival’s staged productions of Anyone Can Whistle, Sunday in the Park with George, and A Little Night Music, and the revue, The Music of Rodgers and Hart. He has appeared in leading roles with Light Opera Works (Carnival, Candide, and Student Prince); and in Lion in Winter for Rising Moon; Vikings: A Musical in Two Axe (After Dark Award, Best Ensemble) and Mirandolina at Noble Fool; Mad Forest, (After Dark Award, Best Ensemble) for Piven Theatre; Burying the Bones and The Memorandum at Stage Left and latitude for Indianapolis’ Phoenix Theatre. Gary is also a certified yoga instructor.
HERMIONE: Hope Uggen is a Junior Theatre major from Shoreview, Minnesota and is delighted to be a part of this year's McElroy Celebration! Past credits at Loyola include: The House of Bernarda Alba, Twelfth Night, The Serpent, and Trojan Women.
PAULINA: Maggie Cramer is a sophomore Theatre major from Minneapolis, MN. This is her second time performing on the Newhart stage this school year, and she's thrilled to return in the McElroy Celebration’s The Winter's Tale!
PERDITA: Meghan Maddigan is extremely excited to be working with such an amazing cast and director. This will be her first performance at Loyola and she hopes there will be many more to come!
FLORIZEL: David Towne is a junior Theatre major from Indianapolis, IN, and is thrilled and honored to act in his second McElroy Celebration. Previously, he has appeared in Loyola's productions of Trojan Women, The Serpent, and Twelfth Night.
CLOWN: Alex Nolan is delighted to be part of the 24th McElroy Celebration! Finishing off her junior year at Loyola, Alex's past credits include Catherine in Proof, and Fabian in Twelfth Night, productions which encouraged her love for performance, gender bending, and great story telling.
